A lot of students participate in nude college runs in the Fall. Those naked group runs help make college years memorable.

It all began in Scandinavia and soon spread throughout the United States and Europe. Strangly, acceptance grew as a result of college streaking in the Sixties and Seventies in the United States.

The current record for the largest group streak was established at the University Of Georgia, with 1,543 simultaneous streakers on March 7, 1974. The University of Colorado comes in second with 1,200 streakers, and the University of Maryland ranks third, with 553 naked students streaking three miles in March 1974. Erskine College claimed the highest per-capita streak, when 25% of its 600 students participated in a streaking party in 1974.

Streaking is distinct from naturism or nudism in that streakers usually intend to be noticed and may choose a place with a large audience for their act, regardless of the risk of arrest (sometimes even intending to be remanded into police custody), whereas naturists and nudists generally prefer to be left in peace. It is also distinct from flashing, in that the intent is generally not to shock or traumatize a victim.

Streakers may streak only once or a few times, possibly as a result of a dare, or may streak so often it can be considered a hobby.

A nude, nudist or naturist beach is a beach where users are legally at liberty to be nude. Sometimes the terms clothing-optional beach or free beach are used. Nude bathing is one of the most common forms of nudity in public. As beaches are usually on public lands, any member of the public is entitled to use the facilities without membership of any movement or subscription to any philosophy.

There are several categories of nude beaches:

Beaches where nudity may be compulsory, subject to weather conditions. This is common in dedicated nudist resorts.

Beaches where nudity is encouraged but not mandatory. This is more common when the beach is part of a private resort or other private property. On such beaches most people go nude but not all.

Clothing is optional (nudity is permitted but not required). Most beaches in Denmark and all in Norway are clothing-optional. The most popular U.S. clothing-optional beach may be Haulover Beach in Miami, Florida, which has a clothing-optional section officially designated by Miami-Dade County, with lifeguards and concessions. On such beaches there may be a mixture of nude, clothed and everything in between. For some clothed people the clothing-optional status only makes them less reluctant to expose themselves briefly when changing clothes.

Unofficially sanctioned public nude beaches - places where nudity is tolerated by the "authorities", mostly by turning a blind eye, or not enforcing the local laws.

Illegal nude beaches - which may result in requests to cover up, uncomfortable glares, a fine or arrest. Places where people dare to go nude, but try to keep a low profile because they could well get in trouble.

Naturism had many different philosophical sources and means many things to different people. There is no one definition. The International Nudist Federation has framed this definition:

Naturism is a lifestyle in harmony with nature, expressed through social nudity, and characterised by self-respect of people with different opinions and of the environment.

At one end of the spectrum are the nudists who just enjoy a nude life style, and at the other are the naturists, who have deeply held beliefs and see communal nudity as just one of many important principles.

Naturism was part of a literary movement in the late 1800s (see the writings of André Gide) which also influenced the art movements of the time specifically Henri Matisse and other Fauve painters. This movement was based on the French concept of joie de vivre, the idea of revelling freely in physical sensations and direct experiences and a spontaneous approach to life. Later this movement became called Naturalism.

A nudist community (or in Europe, naturist community) is a group of nudists/naturists who choose to live together on a permanent basis whilst avoiding wearing clothes; hence their genitalia, buttocks and breasts are exposed.

The term nudist colony was once a term for nudist communities, especially among non-nudists, but is eschewed by most nudists/naturists due to negative connotations that became associated with the term.

There are two objections to the term: the term nudist is not used by European naturists - it connotes a lack of the family-oriented cooperative philosophy, though this connotation does not seem to apply in North America, and the word colony is politically connected with imperialism and authoritarianism. It is different in Francophone communities. In France, many communes invested in landed sites by the sea for summer recreation both by adults and children. These were named "colonie des vacances". Most French school children would spend a week a more each summer at a colonie, which are in many ways analogous to the American summer camp. The international links within naturism explain how the term arose.

A related concept is a naturist village, such as the naturist part of Cap d'Agde or the CHM-Montalivet, where some of the people are permanent residents.

It is not uncommon for private clubs with male-only or female-only facilities to allow (for example) nude swimming. Some argue that in more private environments (whether at home or in, say a single-gender bathhouse), the less clothing one has on when exercising or doing any activity the better.

Nudist clubs traditionally offer members and guests of both sexes the opportunity to swim nude. Many own or lease facilities that allow other sports to be played, including volleyball, tennis, badminton, bowling and the like. Typically these sports are played at a recreational level of intensity, and need not be particularly competitive.

One of the most popular events in naked sport is the international Alps Adria Meeting. This annual contest takes place in the camping ground Kažela close to Medulin/Croatia.

Since 1989, the 7-day-event takes place every summer during the last week of July. Until recently the word smoothy or smoothie was unknown in the nudist world, but now it is becoming fully accepted. Smoothies drop their last piece of clothing - their pubic hair - and so these nudists and naturists are barer than nude!

The word ‘smooth’ refers to the clean shaven body. Naturism has discovered smoothness: men and woman are getting smoother and smoother....

In 1991 an English couple founded an international naturist club, "the Smoothie Club." The word smooth refers to the clean-shaven body. Members of this club drop their last piece of "clothing" - their pubic hair and so they are barer than nude!

A "smoothie" is also used to describe an acomoclitic naturist. Acomoclitic can be used to describe a male or a female who has a preference for hairless genitals.

The Smoothie Club wanted to promote the ideal of a smooth and hairless body so making this barest of naturism more widely accepted. Furthermore the club offered members the chance of getting in touch with other members all over the world.

Prior to the mid-19th century, swimming nude was unexceptional. Kilvert, a skinny-dipper, (1873) describes men's bathing suits then coming into use as "a pair of very short red and white stripped drawers". Period illustrations of women's suits show they were far more cumbersome.

Benjamin Franklin, an avid swimmer, possessed a copy of the Art of Swimming by Melchisédech Thévenot, which featured illustrations of nude swimmers. Among other notable Americans, Presidents John Quincy Adams and Theodore Roosevelt are perhaps the best-known skinny-dippers. Roosevelt describes nude swims in the Potomac with his "tennis cabinet" in his "Autobiography": "If we swam the Potomac, we usually took off our clothes." Quotations from the diary of Rev. Robert Francis Kilvert, an English nude swimmer, in Cec Cinder's The Nudist Idea, show the transition in the England of the 1870s from an acceptance of nude bathing to the mandatory use of bathing suits. Kilvert describes "a delicious feeling of freedom in stripping in the open air and running down naked to the sea".

Nude swimming was once very common in the U.S., especially for young boys and girls swimming in a secluded pond, swimming hole, or section of a river. Swimsuits were originally uncommon in these settings, as they were made out of materials such as wool that required extra care to deal with and were of limited practical benefit.

Although modern swimwear is more practical, nude swimming remains a fairly common activity in rural areas, where an unwanted audience of outsiders is rather unlikely; yet it may be forbidden even there by law. Today, many swimmers in the U.S. limit nude swimming to private locations due to concerns about public nudity.

A sauna is a small room or house designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions, or an establishment with one or more of these and auxiliary facilities. A sauna session can be a social affair in which the participants disrobe and sit or recline in temperatures up to 70°C (158 °F). This induces relaxation and promotes sweating. Any temperature higher than 70° C may cause death.

Saunas can be divided into two basic styles: Conventional saunas that warm the air or infrared saunas that warm objects. Infrared saunas may use various materials in their heating area such as charcoal, active carbon fibers, and other materials.

The oldest known saunas were pits dug in a slope in the ground and primarily used as dwellings in winter. The sauna featured a fireplace where stones were heated to a high temperature. Water was thrown over the hot stones to produce steam and to give a sensation of increased heat. This would raise the apparent temperature so high that people could take off their clothes. The first Finnish saunas are what nowadays are called savusaunas, or smoke saunas. These differed from present-day saunas in that they were heated by heating a pile of rocks called kiuas by burning large amounts of wood about 6 to 8 hours, and then letting the smoke out before enjoying the löyly, or sauna heat.

Many North American and Western European as well as Russian public sport centers and gyms include sauna facilities. They may also be present at public and private swimming pools. This may be a separate area where swim wear may be taken off or a smaller facility in the swimming pool area where one should keep the swim wear on.

Before becoming a nudist, I was a clothesaholic. There should have been a 12 step program, because I was always running to the stores "covering up" my insecurity issues. Now I feel like a whole woman inside and out. Those insecurities came from a Jewish mother who constantly focused on the negative, rather then the positive. I was taught to hide myself until I went to my first nude beach experience at the age of 26 to a nude beach. I have funny looking toes, and I wasn't allowed to leave the house growing up without shoes. Now,when I walk through the gates of a nudist resort. And I have a smile on my face, because I know I AM PERFECT AS I AM.

Are there many single men and women in nudist clubs? Many nudist clubs frown on single men visiting and joining their clubs, because their goal is to protect the women and children who visit their clubs. If they do allow a single man in, they watch them to make sure they aren't being innapropriate. There are two singles groups that meet a Caliente Resort. Caliente Singles meets the first Thursday of the month and Single Naturists of Tampa Bay meets the third Thursday of the month.

While the U.S. was banning pictures of naked bathers, the first nudists were stripping themselves of the Victorian era prudery and bathing naked in Freilichtpark (free light park) in Lubeck, Germany (1903 - 1981). Nacktkultur, the German nudism, stressed naked healthful living, which included daily and women can socialize together nude without being lewd, the concept of nudism got national exposure.

In 1933, the International Nudist Conference was formed, which would later become the American Sunbathing Association, and by the mid 1930s there were eighty-one nudist camps across America. Most nudist camps, to some degree, still followed the philosophy of nudism as part of a healthy regimen, and organized nudism was selective of who could be members of the "landed clubs."

Modern nudism began in Germany and France. France now has a nudist resort city, Cap d'Agde, on the Mediterranean. Since the early seventies, Denmark and the Netherlands have become quite accepting of nudity in general, and there have been nudist activities on city streets and parks of both countries. All but two of Denmark's beaches are clothing optional.

In 1980, the Naturist Society was formed in the U.S. to provide information and support for the free beach and other naturist groups around the country. The Naturist Action Committee monitors and assists in the ongoing nationwide struggle to keep clothing optional beaches and recreational areas from being closed by the narrow-minded fanatics who still echo Comstock's 19th century prudery.

National opinion polls in 1983 and 1990 revealed that 72% of Americans approve of designated clothing optional beaches. To date, over 30 million Americans have experienced mixed social nudity. With the growing number of naturists here, and tourists from Europe, South Florida now has an established clothing optional beach at Haulover.
